The Missing Gingerbread Man

The Holiday Season usually brings gingerbread to mind.  So the First Grade classes came together for a special lesson involving the story The Gingerbread Man.  We even made our very own Gingerbread Man by following a recipe. (A great lesson on sequencing and following written directions!)

After sending our Gingerbread Man to the school kitchen to be baked, the First Graders happily went back to our lessons for the day.  All of a sudden, we were interrupted by the cafeteria ladies with the news that our Gingerbread Man had jumped out of the oven and ran out of the kitchen!

And so, the hunt for our Gingerbread Man began!  We searched high and low for clues as to where the Gingerbread Man could be hiding.  We even enlisted our Big Buddies to help us make Wanted Posters to hang around the school.

We received many reports of Gingerbread Man sightings.  He even managed to turn the Principal’s Office upside down one evening!  He was a fast and mischievous fellow!  The children came up with the ingenious plan of making Gingerbread Houses to lure and trap the sneaky Gingerbread Man.  Our plan worked!  The Gingerbread Man was found and brought back to us.  A great big Thank You to the wonderful parents who came to our class to help build Gingerbread Houses.  The children had a great time!

‘Tis the Season of Giving

Our class is proud to participate in helping others this Holiday Season.

We were so excited to be a part of the annual Fifth Grade Bake Sale to help needy families.  By purchasing baked goods, we helped our fifth grade classes raise over $1,600 for our community.  Way to go!

Our class also participated in the Macy’s Believe Campaign to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Macy’s will donate $1 for every “Letter to Santa” they collect during the Holiday Season.   However, Macy’s donated $2 for every letter received on Believe Day (12/8/17).  That was the day we dropped off our letters of course.  A quick math lesson showed us how the money we raised through these letters can quickly multiply when our Buddy Class, along with other classes, join this wonderful program.  Macy’s Believe Campaign will run until December 24th.

Learning to Code

Our class is learning about programming and how to write codes for video games!  With the help of our Big Buddies, we participated in the Hour of Code along with millions of students world wide.  We learned how to use blocks to create codes for games such as Minecraft and Angry Birds.  This is just the beginning.  We will continue to learn how to code throughout this year.  So exciting!
